The latest cosmetic procedure in the fight against unsightly spider veins has come to our shores after spending many years in Europe. Asclera™ is an injectable agent designed to treat moderate spider veins.  The solution irritates the interior walls of the vein, dissolving the inner lining of the vessel. This, in turn, causes the walls to become sticky and constrict, eventually closing the vein completely so blood cannot enter. Without the blood rushing into the vein, swelling, bulging, discomfort, discoloration and pain associated with spider veins are effectively eliminated.

While this new drug sounds similar to other vein removal treatments, it does offer several advantages.  First, it has an impressive track record that is difficult to ignore. Asclera™ has been used in Europe for over 40 years, and has been used in over five million treatments with a high success rate. Second, its anesthetic properties make it a more comfortable treatment option for patients, meaning it causes less pain and skin irritation than current procedures. Asclera™ has proven to be very effective, and patients have showed satisfaction with the overall procedure and results.

Asclera™ is a relatively quick vein removal procedure, lasting about 30 to 45 minutes. It takes about two to three sessions for patients to see full results, which begin to show about two weeks after the first treatment and continue to improve up to 12 weeks. Come this spring, you may have yet another option to choose from in terms of injectables that erase, and prevent, wrinkles. Xeomin, a new botulinum toxin from the makers of Radiesse and Asclera, just received approval by the FDA to temporarily improve the appearance of lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).

While it’s still unknown how Xeomin will be used differently than Botox or Dysport, we do know that Xeomin is formulated as a more pure form of botulinum toxin without any additives, possibly making it less likely to cause adverse reactions. Xeomin is also the only FDA-approved botulinum toxin that does not require refrigeration. Xeomin is currently used in 14 countries including Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain, under the name Bocouture.

Terms like “sunblock,” “waterproof” and “sweatproof” will be banned under tougher standards.

WASHINGTON — After 33 years of consideration, the Food and Drug Administrationtook steps on Tuesday to sort out the confusing world of sunscreens, with new rules that specify which lotions provide the best protection against the sun and ending claims that they are truly waterproof.

The rules, which go into effect in a year, will also ban sunscreen manufacturers from claiming their products are waterproof or sweatproof because such claims are false. Instead, they will be allowed to claim in minutes the amount of time in which the product is water resistant, depending upon test results.

And only sunscreens that have a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 15 or higher will be allowed to maintain that they help prevent sunburn and reduce the risks of skin cancer and early skin aging.

An effective sunscreen is the best way to maintain a youthful appearance, prevent immunosuppression, and avoid skin cancer. Though it was once believed that UVB radiation was the only wavelength harmful to the skin, evidence now suggests that the UVA radiation is more significant regarding long-term effects on the skin. Sun damage is responsible for up to 90% of the visible signs of premature aging on the human face. In addition to wrinkling, visible blood vessels, skin roughness, pigmentation changes, and skin discoloration, the long-term consequences of photoaging include dramatic loss of skin elasticity and thinning of the skin. This is the result of ultraviolet radiation’s direct effect on the collagen matrix, which is the ‘scaffolding’ that gives firmness and strength to the skin. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation the collagen folds on itself, and as this happens, the skin thins, and wrinkles and furrows appear.

• More than 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers occur in fair skinned people who tend to burn. Dark skinned people, as well as fair skinned people, need to practice sun protection.
• Sun Protection needs to be a lifelong commitment.

What is our PROBLEM? Apparently we can’t get it through our heads that tanning isn’t a healthy habit. According to a survey from the American Academy of Dermatology, a significant percentage of young women went out of their way to use tanning beds or tan outdoors in the last year.
 With all the news coverage that’s been hitting us over the head lately, these results are pretty scary. According to a release on the study, “Thirty-two percent of respondents had used a tanning bed in the past year, and of those respondents, 25% used a tanning bed at least weekly, on average. An overwhelming majority (81%) of all respondents reported that they had tanned outdoors either frequently or occasionally in the past year.”

Deemed a known carcinogen by both the United States Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer panel, ultraviolet light from tanning beds can increase risk of melanoma by up to 75 percent. With approximately 75 percent of skin cancer deaths coming from melanoma, this is serious business. So who is ignoring it?

According to the study, indoor tanning was twice as likely among young women ages 18 to 22 (40 percent of respondents) than it was for teens ages 14 to 17 (22 percent of respondents).

The importance of sun protection is one topic that has not been presented silently. The risks and real-life consequences of not using a daily UVA and UVB sunscreen are serious, and even though many doctors shout it from the rooftop, the warnings may still be falling on deaf ears.

A growing number of medical organizations want to make it harder—if not impossible—for teens to take trips to the tanning salon. Until the FDA is willing to ban tanning beds, the American Academy of Dermatology wants them to prohibit access to indoor tanning for minors, educate all indoor tanning customers about cancer risks and require informed consent, implement and enforce labeling recommendations outlined in the Tanning Accountability and Notification Act, and encourage enforcement of state regulations.

They also support the indoor tanning tax, which would be a signal from the federal government to young people that indoor tanning is dangerous and should be avoided. It has the potential to save patients from the many adverse effects of chronic ultraviolet light damage, including most importantly, melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Think sweating is the pits? With Botox, it doesn’t have to be.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer. Not good news for those who hate to sweat. It’s disastrous news – one could even say the pits – for those who suffer from excessive sweating. Try as we might to stay dry, drippy sweat is coming our way. Does the prospect of being sweat-free for the summer sound appealing?

Many people know the embarrassment of profuse sweating, which can be a significant problem in certain business or social situations. As a result, the various fillers have seen an enormous increase in their utilization. And today, we use these various fillers to achieve younger, more symmetric appearances not just by filling in wrinkles but also by restoring lost volume (the liquid face lift). The Non Surgical Nose Job is an alternative to surgical rhinoplasty for many individuals who wish to alter the shape of their nose or restore symmetry to their nose. The treatment takes only about fifteen to thirty minutes to perform, unlike traditional rhinoplasty which is done under IV sedation or general anesthesia with several weeks of down time, a relatively painful recovery, and severe bruised for several weeks. The non-surgical nose job only requires the application of local numbing cream for about 20 minutes.

Unlike a rhinoplasty where the patient is unconscious, with this procedure, the patient is an active participant in the procedure. The patient has a mirror in his or her hand and can help guide the procedure.

Radiesse (Dr. Tanne’s usual filler of choice for the nose) is injected to fill depressions, smooth out sharp angles, or change the angle of the tip of the nose, restoring symmetry and making your nose appear smaller and more attractive. With Radiesse there is no need for allergy testing. Radiesse stays exactly where you place it. In other words, it does not migrate like some hyaluronic acid based fillers. This is extremely important for injection into the nose. Radiesse lasts about 1 year which is twice as long as most other fillers.
