Microdermabrasion (DiamondTip)

What is Microdermabrasion?

Crystal Free Microdermabrasion, using the Pristine DiamondTip™ System, is a medical technique for removing the topmost layer of skin, leaving it supple and vibrant. This is accomplished by gently abrading the skin with a variety of stainless steel tips imbedded with laser cut diamond chips, while at the same time using suction to remove the dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production.

Crystal Free Pristine DiamondTip™ Microdermabrasion is similar to particle microdermabrasion and chemical peels in its results, but without the adverse effects of loose particles, irritation and skin reaction. Unlike other Microdermabrasion systems, the Pristine DiamondTip™ System at Cosmetic Laser MD uses no loose crystals or other abrasives to contaminate you or the environment.

How much discomfort will I experience?

Crystal Free DiamondTip™ Microdermabrasion treatments are painless yet effective. A widely adjustable vacuum in conjunction controls the degree of effectiveness with the varying coarseness of the tips. At Cosmetic Laser MD we will evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment while at the same time ensuring your comfort. Because exfoliation occurs only as the wand is drawn across the skin, and there are no crystals being blasted against the skin, the Pristine DiamondTip™ crystal–free System is regarded as more gentle than other systems even at its highest settings.

How will I look after the treatment?

Your skin may look slightly flushed immediately after the treatment but should return to normal in 10–30 minutes. Your skin will look and feel smoother and more youthful even after the first treatment and will continue to improve with additional treatments.

How many treatments do I need?

An initial treatment series is usually six sessions, although even a single treatment produces beautiful visible results. Treatments are scheduled about three weeks apart. As dead skin cells will always continue to accumulate, most patients schedule maintenance treatments every few months or as needed. Susan Stevens Tanne, M.D. will discuss your particular needs during your free consultation.

Are there side effects to Microdermabrasion?

Your skin may appear light pink after the treatment. This soon passes. Both moisturizers and makeup may be immediately applied. We apply sunscreen after each treatment, and recommended sunscreen use on the treated areas daily.

Does acne respond to Microdermabrasion?

Results depend on your individual case, which is why a free consultation is so important. Many patients with acne respond well to microdermabrasion, and truly remarkable results have been achieved with even the most severe cases. Other treatments may be recommended, such as BLU–U blue light acne treatment, Photodynamic therapy, topical skin care and oral medications. Acne scars can also be successfully reduced with microdermabrasion, as well as with other laser procedures.

Who is a candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Patients who desire a smooth, refreshed appearance to tMicrodermabrasion (DiamondTip)heir skin, those sensitive to the chemicals involved in other treatments, or those not responding well to acne medications typically are good candidates for microdermabrasion. The treatment is not lengthy, and the recovery period is short. Microdermabrasion is an excellent choice for all skin types. Microdermabrasion is an excellent treatment prior to FotoFacial Skin Rejuvenation – allowing an increased penetration of the light–based treatment. It is also an excellent treatment prior to Photodynamic Therapy. Patients who are pregnant or have pacemakers CAN safely be treated with Microdermabrasion.

Can I go back to work after a Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a wonderful alternative to laser or harsh chemical peels because it is non–invasive, non–surgical and requires no down time after treatment. Normal activities may be resumed immediately after treatment, and your skin is free of redness, irritation and particle contamination.

Can I have Microdermabrasion before a FotoFacial?

Yes! Microdermabrasion is a gentle, yet effective treatment. It is often used in conjunction with other treatments, and compliments the skin care regime prescribed for you by Dr. Tanne. Microdermabrasion is an excellent treatment prior to FotoFacial Skin Rejuvenation – allowing an increased penetration of the light–based treatment. It is also an excellent treatment prior to Photodynamic Therapy.
