Portrait PSR Skin Resurfacing
The Breakthrough Plasma Technology behind True Skin Regeneration—a dramatically different, clinically proven treatment.
Every once in a while the science of beauty takes a great leap forward. Something comes along that change everything — a breakthrough that opens the door to new possibilities and raises results to a whole new level.
Introducing Portrait®, the most important advance in cosmetic treatment in a decade. Portrait® is not a laser or light treatment or variation of anything else. It is not a laser, radio frequency, or light–based treatment. It is unlike any other treatment available today. It is a completely new plasma energy technology that works both on and below the surface of the skin to modify the skin's architecture so that new collagen is generated. It is the only treatment actually proven to generate new skin—not just at the surface, but below the surface—for as long as a year after treatment. And while Portrait® may be the latest advance, it's backed by years of clinical research and hard science.
Portrait® is effective in reducing the look of fine lines and deep wrinkles, treating sun–damaged skin, improving skin tone and texture, improving acne scars and tightening skin. It works on a variety of skin types.
For smoother, more beautiful skin that leaves them wondering, choose Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing
During the short procedure, the unique scientific action of Portrait® transfers plasma energy to the treated area without direct contact to the skin. This technique preserves the skin's outer layers, which act as a protective dressing until new skin regenerates. Downtime is minimal and clinical studies show that the improvements you see following your treatment will become even more dramatic over time.
With Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing, treatment options range from the no downtime Portrait Express Plasma Facial to a high energy treatment with CO2 laser like results.
True skin regeneration for smoother, more beautiful skin
Portrait® skin regeneration can be used to treat an entire face or a specific area. Treatment for an entire face can take as little as 20 minutes; a regional treatment can be as short as10 – 15 minutes. Shortly after, you will see improvements in your skin texture, tone and elasticity, and diminished wrinkles giving you a new, more vibrant and youthful appearance. Over time you will see continuing improvement that is truly unique.
The results are comparable to aggressive laser resurfacing but the downtime is dramatically reduced. It keeps working, stimulating collagen production that has a unique matrix and increasing elastin for up to one year with continued improvement to the skin. And, Portrait® is safe and effective. It gives you the results you want without the lengthy downtime or the risks associated with other treatments.
What is plasma skin regeneration?
Portrait® skin regeneration is the latest technique in resurfacing and rejuvenating skin. Unlike lasers which use light energy to target a specific component of the skin such as water, hemoglobin, or pigment, PSR uses pulses of ionized inert nitrogen gas to alter structures below the surface of the skin, creating unique conditions for continuing regeneration and improvement in wrinkles, acne scarring, skin texture, tone, and discoloration. This technique preserves the skin's outer layers, which act as a protective "biological dressing" until new skin regenerates. Working below the surface of the skin, PSR creates the right conditions and natural growth factors for generating new skin and creating new collagen for continuous improvement in wrinkles, acne scars, skin tone and texture. Portrait® skin regeneration is FDA approved for all of these purposes. Clinical studies show continued improvements for as long as a year after treatment.

What if I don't want too much downtime after my treatment?
Plasma skin rejuvenation can be performed at either high or low energy levels. Lower energy treatments do not penetrate as deep. Generally, three low energy treatments are required at three–week intervals to achieve similar results to a single high–energy treatment. The recovery time is usually about three to four days.
Higher energy treatments penetrate deeper into the skin and induce a powerful induction of collagen remodeling and tightening. There is more downtime, but the results from one treatment are more substantial. The recovery time from one single high–energy treatment is usually around 10 days.
Portrait Express™ the Plasma Facial—no downtime!
By using an ultra low energy level, Susan Stevens Tanne, M.D. can provide a Portrait treatment without need for downtime.
Portrait Express™ the Plasma Facial, is a series of 6 very low energy treatments, spaced two to three weeks apart with no downtime!
Portrait Express™ is a superior alternative to treating fine lines and wrinkles and improving the overall texture of the skin.
The results are gradual and long term.
All it requires is application of a hydrating cream on the skin and then subjecting the skin to the plasma energy.
This procedure targets the foundation of the skin itself.
It replaces damaged collagen and elastin.
It is a painless and fast procedure.
Portrait Express Plasma Facial isn't a lunchtime procedure, it's a coffee break procedure!
Portrait® skin regeneration can rejuvenate, tighten, and regenerate skin on the upper and lower eyelids without surgery. Never before have we had a procedure beyond plastic surgery to do serious rejuvenation on the upper and lower eyelids for aging, loose and lax skin. Surgery removes the excess tissue and skin, but Portrait® improves skin quality. It smoothes fine lines and treats both wrinkles and sun damage, which surgery alone cannot do. At Cosmetic Laser MD, Dr. Tanne often combines Portrait Eyes with Botox Cosmetic to reduce squint lines (Crows feet) and Juvederm to plump out the hollow area below the eye. Call to learn about the wonders of Portrait Eyes for the upper and lower eyelids.
Portrait® skin regeneration is currently the best treatment for tough lines and wrinkles around the mouth. It is even more remarkable when combined Juvederm injectable filler to plump thinned lips. The stubborn "smoker's lip lines", serious aging, or sun damage finally have a realistic solution.
Portrait for Acne Scarring
For acne scars there is now an exciting new treatment available. Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing has received FDA approval to treat acne scarring. This new treatment is producing excellent results. Call to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Tanne to discuss you individual needs.
What precautions do I need to take before treatment?
Sunscreen should be used for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. Retinols, alpha–hydroxy acids, strong scrubs/exfoliation, tretinoin, or any vitamin A derivatives should also be ceased at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. Anti–viral medication may be prescribed if you have past history of cold sores. Doctor Tanne will prescribe appropriate medication(s) during your consultation.
What does treatment involve?
For high–energy treatments, you will generally need to spend 2 — 3 hours at Cosmetic Laser MD. Anesthetic cream is applied for 1 hour prior to treatment. This numbs the face for the procedure. In addition, anesthetic nerve block injections are given to help numb the face further. Usually, we use a mild oral sedative and analgesic to help reduce any discomfort from the procedure. This is usually given just prior to the procedure. Most people tolerate the procedure well with the above preparation. For low energy treatments, only anesthetic cream is required rather than injections. For ultra low energy Portrait Express treatments, only the application of a hydrating cream on the skin is necessary. The face is divided into sections, and each section is systematically covered with the plasma pulses. Usually treatment takes around 20 to 45 minutes for a full face (depending on the energy level and number of passes) and 10 – 15 minute for Portrait Eyes or Portrait Mouth.
What happens after treatment?
Your face will appear red and slightly swollen immediately after treatment. Over the next few days, the skin in the treated areas will bronze and eventually peel off. It is very important that you treat your face very gently for at least 10 days. You will not be able to wash your face for 24 hours. Aquaphor is usually applied to the face twice a day until the peeling process is complete. You will also need to use diluted vinegar to dab or spray on your face to reduce any itchiness that might be present.
Depending on the energy of the treatment performed, you may not be able to wear make up for 3 (lower energy) to 10 days (higher energy). Sun protection is essential after treatment, and direct sunlight should be avoided. Mineral makeup and sunscreen can be worn immediately after Portrait Express treatments.
As mentioned previously, there is no downtime for Portrait Express treatment. The downtime for a low energy treatment is about three to five days, whereas the downtime for a higher energy treatment is around five to 10 days. This is the period of time that it takes the skin to return to relative normality.
Are the results permanent?
The results gained from Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing treatments are permanent. Your skin will still be exposed to the environment and will be subject to the effects of the sun and gravity. It does not stop the aging process, but helps in reversing any skin damage, wrinkles, pigmentation, and acne scarring present.
What is the difference between Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing and Fraxel?
Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing, unlike Fraxel, is not a laser, rather it is a unique technology using plasma energy instead. Plasma skin regeneration at high energy levels (PSR3) is a much more effective treatment than even several Fraxel treatments for problems such as wrinkles, especially around the mouth and eyes, sun damaged skin and acne scarring. The downtime of one high–energy plasma treatment is longer than a single Fraxel treatment, however, less than the accumulated downtime of several Fraxel treatments.
How much does Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing cost?
The cost of Portrait® PSR Skin Resurfacing depends on the energy level used and the area treated. Dr. Tanne will discuss your individual needs during a complimentary consultation.
