PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Hair Restoration

RESTORE AND GROW HAIR WITH PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA) A NON-INVASIVE SOLUTION FOR MALE AND FEMALE HAIR LOSS
PRP Hair Restoration in Livingston, New Jersey

PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) hair restoration is a proactive hair loss option that Susan Stevens Tanne, M.D. at Cosmetic Laser MD offers to both men and women of Livingston, Short Hills and the surrounding area in New Jersey. PRP hair restoration is an alternative, non-surgical therapy for patients suffering from androgenic hair loss or who need hair growth stimulation.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. PRP is created from your own blood, which in addition to red and white blood cells, contains platelets. The PRP is processed at high speed, resulting in higher concentrations of your platelets, which are rich in growth factors and are the most potent healers of the body. Growth factors promote healing by restoring the normal architecture and strength of the tissue.

PRP contains platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing and as a safe and effective treatment option for male and female pattern hair loss.

PRP specific cells that causes hair growth include:

  • Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)—promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication, skin formation;
  • Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b)—promotes growth of matrix between cells, bone metabolism;
  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)—promotes blood vessel formation;
  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)—promotes cell growth and differentiation, blood vessel formation, collagen formation;
  • Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2)—promotes growth of specialized cells and blood vessel formation; and,
  • Insulin Like Growth Factor – (IGF)—a regulator of normal physiology in nearly every type of cell in the body.
PRP for Treating Hair Loss

PRP therapy for hair growth is a fast outpatient procedure, taking about one hour. The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) commonly used in hair restoration is “autologous,” meaning that it is derived from the patient’s own blood.

The procedure involves drawing a small sample of your blood into a test tube. Then, the sample is spun in a centrifuge at high speeds to separate the platelets and other blood components, creating the platelet-rich plasma. A platelet activator, calcium chloride, is added. The PRP, which contains many growth factors, is then placed into syringes and re- injected into the area(s) of hair loss.

The numerous growth factors in PRP promote healing, increase local blood flow, and stimulate the hair follicle’s healthy growth. We recommend that patients schedule an initial series of three treatments spaced six weeks apart.

PRP Treatments at Cosmetic Laser MD

At Cosmetic Laser MD in Livingston, New Jersey, Susan Stevens Tanne, M.D. and her expert staff will consult with you about you individual hair loss concerns. We can begin your PRP treatment at the time of your consultation, if PRP therapy is appropriate.

We begin photographing the area of hair loss. Then we apply topical numbing cream, on the area of the scalp to be treated, for 45 minutes. After this is removed we cleanse the skin, followed by administration of the PRP treatment by Dr. Tanne. Dr. Tanne injects the PRP into the scalp, where hair growth is weakest, at 1 centimeter intervals.Treatment takes about 30 – 45 minutes to complete. Post care information is reviewed with each patient.

After the initial session we will administer the next treatments at 6 week intervals. We recommend a initial series of three treatments followed by maintenance treatments as needed. This is usually at three month intervals for the first year and then every 6 months depending on the response.

Patients are monitored photographically throughout the course of their treatments to assess the benefits of therapy.

After 20 years of trying every drug, supplement, diet and procedure for hair loss – including driving four hours twice a week for laser therapy -Lina Telford, a graphic artist, gave up on her “comb over” (her description) and shaved her head. From then on, she alternated between a $1,500 wig and a $4,000 wig.

“When you hear people complain about having a bad hair day, you almost can’t bear it,” she said. “You’re like, ‘Honey, you have no idea.’ ”

Is PRP for Me?

Many women and men are candidates for PRP hair regeneration therapy. If you suffer from weakening hair quality, decreasing hair volume, loss of scalp coverage or increased hair shedding, PRP treatment could be a successful treatment for you.

This treatment is natural and safe. There is no possibility of contracting an infection from other people because PRP only uses your blood cells, and the cells are never changed or altered. Your immune system also will not reject the injections.
