Rosacea and Facial Redness

Rosacea is a chronic sensitive skin condition often involving inflammation of the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.

Rosacea typically begins any time after age 30 and may come and go.  Sufferer’s may experience sensitivity, excessive flushing, persistent redness, broken capillaries and/or breakouts.  Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear.  Left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue.  In many rosacea patients, the eyes are also affected, feeling irritated and appearing watery or bloodshot.

Rosacea can vary substantially from one individual to another, and in most cases some rather than all of the potential signs and symptoms may appear.  There are four primary signs of rosacea.  A history of frequent blushing or flushing is one.  This facial redness may come and go, and is often the earliest sign of the disorder.  Persistent redness is the most common individual sign of rosacea, and may resemble a blush or sunburn that does not go away.  Small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples often develop.  While these may resemble acne, blackheads are absent and burning or stinging may occur.  In many people visible blood vessels become visible on the skin.

While there is no cure for rosacea and the cause is unknown, medical therapy is available to control or reverse its signs and symptoms.  Each of our in-office treatments and daily care regimens are customized to decrease inflammation and fight off redness and discomfort.  Because the signs and symptoms of rosacea vary from one patient to another, treatment must be tailored for each individual case.  Appropriate intense pulsed light (FotoFacial RF) treatments are recommended to remove visible blood vessels and decrease flushing.   The gentle exfoliating treatments we use – Chemical Peels –  will remove surface build-up, increase cell turnover, decrease inflammation and decrease possible bacterial factors and are very effective, yet a non-irritating way to allow for better skin function. Lightwave Red LED therapy calms down irritated skin. Having a daily skin care regime consisting of a low level retinol (Night Defense 3)  in conjunction with anti-inflammatory (Tanne MD RosaSense Medical Skin Care) and an excellent mineral-based sunscreen will achieve cellular turnover and better skin function.  In addition to medical therapy, we strive to help rosacea patients improve their chances of maintaining remission by identifying and avoiding lifestyle and environmental factors that may trigger flare-up or aggravate their individual conditions.
