#NoFilterNeeded! Skincare Staples for the Perfect Selfie
by Lauren Salomon
Practice Manager, Cosmetic Laser MD
We have all done it, taken a selfie and snuck in the beauty filter thinking no one would notice. If you are unfamiliar with what this is (or living under a rock) this filter, commonly found on Snapchat or Instagram, chisels cheeks, highlights the skin, awakens the eyes and completely sets an unrealistic view on our realistic faces. You can spot a filtered photo a mile away.
According to a recent article in New Beauty, Snapchat’s “beauty” filter in particular – it basically gives you a flawless complexion with the tap of one button – makes us look so good, that when we swipe back to normal mode, we’re left with this “why can’t I look like that all the time?” feeling.
This borderline anime recreation of yourself is now becoming an addiction. I know it’s hard to say no to the flawless skin these beauty filters give us, but what if I told you that flawless skin can come without the help of your smartphone?
There are selfie certified staple products that every woman should have for gorgeous skin. They correct the damage we have done to our skin in the past and protect from the damage we will do in the future. They smooth, tighten and correct, but most importantly make us look fabulous in pictures.
Retinol The superhero of skin care. This does everything. It works overtime to bring up new cells and get rid of the ones that make you look…old. This form Vitamin A is a much gentler version of Retin-A which can leave you looking like a glorified science experiment. Retinol will supercharge your collagen production, correct hyperpigmentation, smooth out fine lines, and leave your skin tight, toned and ready for your close up.
Vitamin C Just like our diet needs antioxidants, so does our skin. If aiding in collagen production isn’t enough, topical vitamin C protects your skin against the ever dreaded FREE RADICALS. That may seem like a really cool girl band but when it comes to your skin we don’t want a ticket to their show. Free radicals are molecules responsible for tissue damage and aging. They lead to wrinkles, dark spots, and other really horrible things that cause us nightmares.
Sunscreen This concept is so simple, yet we refuse to listen. We are like children refusing to eat our vegetables all over again even though we know how good they are for us. Please pay very good attention to what I am about to tell you. THE SUN IS CAUSING YOU TO LOOK OLDER THAN YOU REALLY ARE. If you think that dab of SPF 15 in your really expensive moisturizer is doing it, you are wrong and I want to make it right for you. Every woman needs a designated layer of pure UVA/UVB broad spectrum mineral-based sunscreen on their face every day. We all get UV damage even on the gloomiest of days. If you think you don’t need it because you don’t “go in the sun” you are wrong. Unless you are a vampire living the movie Twilight you need sunscreen and you need it now. Your face and your pictures depend on it.
With these 3 products in your skin care army you will no longer need to swipe right to feel better about yourself. Be your own filter naturally and love the skin you’re in….you’re “selfie” depends on itJ
My own selfie before and after “Beauty Filter”. My skin already looked flawless due to diligent use of our CLMD Advanced Skin Solutions products. The after photo makes me look like an cartoon alien!
Truths About Microneedling – Not as Bad as It Sounds
Microneedlingis hot these days and for good reason: It stimulates collagen to give you better-looking skin on every level. Whether done at home or in a physicians office, there’s still a lot out there that’s not clear. Here are some truths to remove any misconceptions about this treatment.
Myth: What your doctor uses on your skin is exactly the same as what you can use yourself at home. Fact: This couldn’t be further from the truth. Doctors always have access to stronger medical grade versions that aren’t safe and acceptable for at home use. If you have microneedling done at your doctor’s office, expect to get the state-of-the-art new microneedling pens; at home you can only get microneedle rollers. You can amp up your results by adding PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to the treatment for an even greater rejuvenating glow. Check out our BioLift Treatment.
Myth: Microneedlinghurts. Fact: For the most part, microneedling may be uncomfortable but it’s not totally unbearable. Microneedling procedures done in an office setting may be performed with topical anesthesia depending on the depth of the procedure being performed.
Myth: Microneedling leaves holes in the skin. Fact: While microneedling does create a controlled injury in the skin to incite collagen production and does it by creating microscopic holes, the holes it creates are so tiny that they can’t be seen by the naked eye. You may notice more of a red or pink flush to the skin, which will dissipate soon afterwards, and potentially some bleeding. No need to worry, it’s totally normal. Plus, makeup can easily cover up anything that you don’t want exposed.
Myth: The treatment can’t be done around the eyes or lips. Fact: Thanks to advancements in both science and skin care, microneedling can safely be done in these areas as long as the right device is used. Microneedling tools, such as DermaPen, which can be adjusted to an appropriate needling depth for different areas, can be used on the upper eyelid, close to the eyelashes of the lower lid, the areas on the side of the nose and the upper lip.
Myth: The only benefit you’ll get from microneedling is an anti-aging one. Fact: Sure, the treatment works on an anti-aging level to create smoother skin but it has been shown to be effective in correcting acne marks, too. The microneedles stimulate collagen production to help with scarring—when retinoids and other collagen stimulating topicals are applied to the skin after a treatment they are able to penetrate better for more improvement. Applying PRP before microneedling (our BioLifttreatment) adds your own growth factors which penetrate the skin giving you an unparalleled rejuvenation.

ULTRASHAPE – THE NEW, PAINLESS WAY TO MELT FAT AWAY PERMANENTLY
In the world of noninvasive fat fighters, there’s always something new on the horizon. One of those, a treatment that does wonders for the body called UltraShape, is a fat melter that targets the abdominal and flank areas to painlessly get rid of fat for good.
GREAT NEWS, we will be offering this procedure SOON!
Instead of using heat or cold, like other fat fighters do, UltraShape makes use of pulsed focused ultrasound energy to target fat without destroying the tissue, nerves, muscles or vascular system. With UltraShape, there is no freeze, no burn and no downtime.
During each 45-minute UltraShape treatment session, done only in a doctor’s office, (on average, three are needed), a handpiece is placed on the body, which is said to feel like the vibration of a cell phone. Totally customizable, UltraShape has made its mark for the mere fact that it works. What sets it apart from other noninvasive fat fighters is that it doesn’t just get rid of fat, but it also sculpts it, too. Some experts say UltraShape may just be the next best thing to liposuction.
Choose fillers to fix hollowing in the tear troughs if there is no loose skin. Ideal patients are those who have a depression like a tear trough in the lower lids, had too much fat removed during surgery or are hollow under the eyes. Some physicians prefer fillers (such as Restylane or Belotero Balance) because they are reversible and to not require overcorrection.
Choose fat for longer-lasting results. Your physician will gently remove a very small amount of fat from elsewhere on your body (often the love handles), clean it and then inject it under the eyes for a volumizing effect. Fat can also be used to blend the area between the lower lid and the cheeks.
Choose surgery to correct loose skin or excessive muscle and/or fat in the lids.
Certain areas of the face are prone to fat loss—others are not. The cheeks and eyes frequently fall victim to the effects of volume loss first; the lips, eyes and temples eventually catch up.
Around the Upper + Lower Eye Sockets The majority of fat in the face is in the cheeks, and as these pockets deflate, a depression forms from the inner corner of the eyes straight downward (called a tear trough or hollow). The appearance of hollows is related to loss of fat and bone expansion. Since the same amount of tissue is occupying a larger volume, the result is that the eyes look hollow. Sometimes, the fat protrudes, creating a bag. Adding a hyaluronic acid filler or fat restores volume, making the eyes the focus of the face.
Around the Brows A loss of fat and fullness in the brows coupled with lines and wrinkles between the brows and on the forehead can create a saggy brow and hooding on the upper lids. Fillers and fat are the most common ways to fix the problem. Just a little bit of volume (using a filler like Restylane) helps, and it is even more dramatic when combined with a neuromodulator (Dysport, Botox or Xeomin) for an overall rejuvenating effect. The combination of fillers (injectables or fat micro-grafts) plus a neuromodulator produces a better result than either one alone.
At the Temples You wouldn’t think of the temples as an area of concern but they are. As fat diminishes from the temples, they become sunken and appear narrow. Hollow temples can call unwanted attention to the cheeks. Filler such as Restylane, Perlane and Radiesse, used to gently, soften the area for a more youthful look. Fat micrografts are a good alternative and give a more permanent result.
In the Cheeks The cheek area is one of the first parts of the face where a loss of volume is noticeable. As the fat in the cheeks begins to descend, it creates nasolabial folds (smile lines) around the mouth and a flattened look in the cheeks, making you look “tired”. To correct the folds and the cheeks, the natural volume needs to be restored, using either injectable fillers or fat micro-grafts, for a refreshed, natural look.
In the Lips The lips are made of collagen, oil and tissue—not fat—but they too experience the effects of volume loss as they start to thin out. While fillers or fat can help to reinstate plumpness in the lips, the surrounding lines need to be softened with either laser resurfacing or a combination of Botox, Dysport or Xeomin and fillers (I prefer Restylane and Belotero).
At The Corners of the NoseDown Toward the Mouth As the fat in the cheeks begins to fall, there is less support for the skin around the mouth, causing folds to develop in the area where the end of the nose and the lips meet.
On the Jawline The jaw area loses definition with time and the natural contours become boxy and saggy. Volume loss in the jaw area usually comes along with a lack of structure in the cheeks. Injections of hyaluronic acids, Radiesse or fat can all help reshape and revolumize the area.
The Skin Smoother Crystal free DiamondTip™ Microdermabrasion removes the topmost layer of skin, delivering optimum exfoliation for softer, smoother, supple and vibrant skin. This is accomplished by gently abrading the skin with a variety of stainless steel tips imbedded with laser cut diamond chips, while using suction to remove the dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production.
Similar to microdermabrasion, the SilkPeel™ Dermalinfusion™ System combines non–invasive exfoliation with deep delivery of patient–specific solutions directly to the skin without the use of crystal or other chemical exfoliants. These serums are infused deep into the skin where they are most effective, deeply delivering the vitamins, antioxidants, and other therapeutic ingredients that your skin needs most.
As the Practice Manager at Cosmetic Laser MD my business is to make sure each patient has a relaxing and positive experience and that they are happy with the treatments they have received. They want the best of the best. Being a make-up artist as well, I make it my business to try most cosmetics on the market. My make-up clients are savvy and also want the best of the best.
When a Representitive from Oxygenetix came into our practice one day, I was skeptical. I have tried medical mineral based products before, and always thought they looked artificial. Skin should look like skin and not masked by the dreaded “make-up look”.
She gave me shade “Pearl” and asked me to try it. The next day my skin looked amazing but more importantly it FELT amazing. I have a ruddy complexion and I am very dry. This made my skin look flawless, moisturized, and did not clog my pores. The best part was after a 10 hour work day, my make-up was still on. I was hooked and ordered every color for my make-up clients.
Immediately after Laser treatment, Oxygenetix Foundation was applied to the right side of the face. The foundation camouflages the redness and helps soothe the skin.
Many of our patients considering treatments such as chemical peels, injectables (fillers, Dysport, etc.), or laser therapy, shelve the idea due to fear of how they will look while recuperating. Unlike other make-up, Oxygenetix can be applied to sensitive skin, damaged skin or skin that is healing. By using Oxygenetix after these procedures, patients see significantly shortened downtime and their skin looks flawless just minutes after most procedures. When followed by applications of Oxygenetix, the visual evidence of these procedures is immediately camouflaged and hidden from view. Continuous applications ensures rapid healing.
The key to this make-up is an ingredient called “Ceravitae” which is an amazing molecule that speeds connective tissue healing, and builds collagen layers. Not only is this the gold standard for post-op make-up, it is just a great make-up for the everyday woman who wants to look younger and do something great for their skin.
Aside from its oxygenating properties this make-up is water resistant (hello summer!), transfer resistant, and has a mineral grade SPF 25. With a built in primer, it works beautifully on an acne patient or a rosacea sufferer.
We have been using this make-up in the office for almost 2 years and it has become a cult favorite. It has a medium coverage that will conceal just about anything or can be sheered with a lotion to the consistency of a tinted moisturizer on a “light” day.
In my make-up career I do over 50 weddings a year and my brides love the longevity of this make-up. Through the ceremony, reception, pictures, etc., this make-up will not move and mimics an airbrush appearance.
I invite you to come into the office and see for yourself. This make-up will change the way you feel about your skin. With over 10 shades in both blue and yellow undertones there is a shade for everyone. Conceal and heal at the same time with Oxygenetix Foundation.
Spring has sprung and summer is around the corner, which means it’s officially shorts season. Baring so much leg is fine for some, but for others with cellulite, varicose veins or troublesome unwanted hair, it causes a good amount of anxiety. Read about some of the best procedures for getting lean legs in time for beach season.
Spider/Varicose Veins Spider and varicose veins are really just enlarged veins, but many women find them to be extremely unsightly. With 50 percent of women in the United States suffering from them, they can be a result of genetics, pregnancy and/or hormonal changes. There are however a couple of options for treatment. Sclerotherapy, when a doctor injects the veins with a solution that irritates the lining of the veins, forcing them to collapse, is a popular and effective option. At Cosmetic Laser MD we use Asclera, the newest injectable solution. There are also lasers like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which work to reduce redness and the look of enlarged veins.
Hairy Legs If you hate to shave your legs or simply wish you just never had to deal with it, laser hair removal might be a good option for you. After just one session hair growth is stunted and after several sessions the hair grows back thinner and virtually invisible until you’ve completed all of your prescribed treatments.
Cellulite If the term “cottage cheese thighs” hits a bit too close to home, then you might want to consider a cellulite treatment for cellulite-free legs. While diet and exercise are your best bet for fighting unwanted dimples, for those that can’t get rid of rippling, there are some in-office procedures that might help. A combination of laser, vacuum, massage and/or radio-frequency devices may help to smooth out cellulite in problem areas. At Cosmetic Laser MD we offer VelaShape and the NEWReaction by Viora.
EMERALD GREEN: How to Wear Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year
So long tangerine tango! It’s been a good run, but as with anything, your reign as top color has come to an end. That’s because 2013 is the year to go green, emerald green that is. As luck would have it, this bold shade of green is an amazing color to incorporate into your look.
It is such a great universal shade that works on many different people, in many different ways. Emerald really looks best on anyone. It’s the type of color that reads beautifully on both warm and cool undertones. If you are on the cooler side, look for greens with a blue undertone. If you are on the warm side, look for emeralds with more of a yellow/golden undertone.
It will look good on everyone, but you need to use it strategically on different types of skin, eye and hair color. If you have light skin and blue or green eyes, use it as a liner. For brown eyes, go for a smoky eye look. And for medium or dark skin, use the color in a smoky eye and dab it on the inner corners of the eye to make them pop.
To create an emerald smoky eye, start with a brown cream eyeliner as a base and then quickly blend in an emerald eyeshadow out onto your eyelid. Or simply apply an emerald liner around your eyes to create fun definition. You can even use this color to give your eyelashes an added kick. Tap some of the color at the ends of your lashes as you apply your mascara. HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
When you want to look and feel younger, your face is the front and center battleground of that fight. And while there are a few ways to surgically make the face look years younger (facelift, neck lift, even a nose job), many women might not be ready for the commitment or cost of a surgical procedure. If not, there are “best practices” for rejuvenating the face without reaching for the scalpel. Here are some of the best treatments to get a younger face without surgery.
SKINCARE – First and foremost, start with a good skin-care routine. Routine skin care by trained, experienced estheticians is invaluable in producing, improving and monitoring the skin. Let’s face it – beautiful skin always creates a more youthful look. A comprehensive skin-care program that may include professional products and treatments (like microdermabrasion and facial peels) can minimize sun damage, soften fine lines, reduce acne, rehydrate dry skin and brighten dull, aging skin.
INJECTABLES – If you want to take it one step further, a cosmetic physician has more options available to make the face look younger. Before finding the best method for facial rejuvenation, your doctor has to take into account your age. When you are younger, we’re getting rid of wrinkles with products like Dysport, Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvéderm and Belotero. For restoring more volume in an aging face my choice filler is Radiesse.
LASERS – Noninvasive radio-frequency treatments, on the right patient, can work wonders. I am a big fan of eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation and Sublime Skin Tightening (the eTwo duo). I also love to treat with FotoFacial RF for color correction and eMatrix for texture improvement with my FotoMatrix combo. For a more significant result CO2RE Fractional CO2 Resurfacing is my go-to treatment. It is an ablative laser, but it’s not as invasive as making incisions. It is a very effective tool in treating fine lines, irregularities and brown spots. With one treatment, a major improvement can be obtained.
When injectables and fillers were first introduced, they pretty much served one purpose: to fill wrinkles. Over time, and with off-label experimentation, their use has become more widespread as the effects of volume loss are a constant complaint. Today, the “Liquid Lift”—the use of fillers to give a more lifted and youthful look to the face—is gaining popularity as replacing lost volume via injections allows the skin to take on a lifted appearance and redefines the natural contours of the face.
With only a handful of product options available, the main difference between filling and lifting, comes down to where the filler is placed and how deep.
