Recently “New Beauty” published an article on the top things we can do to get perfect skin. The article was so spot on and informative that I wanted to talk about the procedures and protocols they mentioned and go into more depth about it. You can find the article mentioned at:
1. Microneedling with PRP
This procedure is amazing. I mean ahhhh-maz-ing. Microneedling uses tiny needles to create micro-channels for smoother tighter skin. We paired with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) which uses your own blood’s growth factors to stimulate new cell and collagen growth. I have seen enlarged pores and acne scars virtually disappear. One treatment will give you desirable results. The procedure is comfortable and non-invasive, not to mention a lot friendlier on the wallet than laser treatments.

Something you can do every night to stop the aging process without spending a lot of money and time in a doctor’s office? Yes please! Why every woman is not on a retinol product is beyond me. This stimulates cell turnover…CELL TURNOVER! That means it takes away the dull, wrinkled, gross dead skin on the surface and replaces it with softer newer, younger looking skin. A gentle but potent blended retinol like our CLMD Enriched Serum will give you softer tighter skin after just a month of use.
How good does a nice non-surgical brow lift sound? If you said YES then get in for a Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin treatment ASAP. Not only do these products soften the forehead and Crow’s feet, but they prevent extreme movement in those area for future wrinkle prevention.
Neuromodulators are purified proteins that are injected into facial muscles, causing relaxation of the muscle. This relaxes the pull on the skin, which relaxes the wrinkles. Neuromodulators are a great first step into the world of non-invasive cosmetic procedures. I mean who wants to be the only woman at brunch not talking about how good their Botox/Dysport/Xeomin looks?
Anyone who has ever walked through our front door has gotten the “sunscreen speech”. You already know the sun causes 80% of aging. You know that a DESIGNATED layer needs to be applied daily and even though it says your make-up or day cream contains sunscreen, it still isn’t enough to prevent hyperpigmentation, skin sagging, and wrinkles. How many of you have those three skin conditions on your bucket list? I didn’t think so. The bottom line is as much as we love to see you in the office we rather have you doing one simple extra step in your skin care routine every day, and come in less and less for anti-aging treatments.

Skincare Staples for the Perfect Selfie
by Lauren Salomon
Practice Manager, Cosmetic Laser MD
We have all done it, taken a selfie and snuck in the beauty filter thinking no one would notice. If you are unfamiliar with what this is (or living under a rock) this filter, commonly found on Snapchat or Instagram, chisels cheeks, highlights the skin, awakens the eyes and completely sets an unrealistic view on our realistic faces. You can spot a filtered photo a mile away.
According to a recent article in New Beauty, Snapchat’s “beauty” filter in particular – it basically gives you a flawless complexion with the tap of one button – makes us look so good, that when we swipe back to normal mode, we’re left with this “why can’t I look like that all the time?” feeling.
This borderline anime recreation of yourself is now becoming an addiction. I know it’s hard to say no to the flawless skin these beauty filters give us, but what if I told you that flawless skin can come without the help of your smartphone?
There are selfie certified staple products that every woman should have for gorgeous skin. They correct the damage we have done to our skin in the past and protect from the damage we will do in the future. They smooth, tighten and correct, but most importantly make us look fabulous in pictures.
The superhero of skin care. This does everything. It works overtime to bring up new cells and get rid of the ones that make you look…old. This form Vitamin A is a much gentler version of Retin-A which can leave you looking like a glorified science experiment. Retinol will supercharge your collagen production, correct hyperpigmentation, smooth out fine lines, and leave your skin tight, toned and ready for your close up.
Just like our diet needs antioxidants, so does our skin. If aiding in collagen production isn’t enough, topical vitamin C protects your skin against the ever dreaded FREE RADICALS. That may seem like a really cool girl band but when it comes to your skin we don’t want a ticket to their show. Free radicals are molecules responsible for tissue damage and aging. They lead to wrinkles, dark spots, and other really horrible things that cause us nightmares.
This concept is so simple, yet we refuse to listen. We are like children refusing to eat our vegetables all over again even though we know how good they are for us. Please pay very good attention to what I am about to tell you. THE SUN IS CAUSING YOU TO LOOK OLDER THAN YOU REALLY ARE. If you think that dab of SPF 15 in your really expensive moisturizer is doing it, you are wrong and I want to make it right for you. Every woman needs a designated layer of pure UVA/UVB broad spectrum mineral-based sunscreen on their face every day. We all get UV damage even on the gloomiest of days. If you think you don’t need it because you don’t “go in the sun” you are wrong. Unless you are a vampire living the movie Twilight you need sunscreen and you need it now. Your face and your pictures depend on it.
With these 3 products in your skin care army you will no longer need to swipe right to feel better about yourself. Be your own filter naturally and love the skin you’re in….you’re “selfie” depends on itJ
My own selfie before and after “Beauty Filter”. My skin already looked flawless due to diligent use of our CLMD Advanced Skin Solutions products. The after photo makes me look like an cartoon alien!
Microneedling is hot these days and for good reason: It stimulates collagen to give you better-looking skin on every level. Whether done at home or in a physicians office, there’s still a lot out there that’s not clear. Here are some truths to remove any misconceptions about this treatment.
Myth: What your doctor uses on your skin is exactly the same as what you can use yourself at home.
Fact: This couldn’t be further from the truth. Doctors always have access to stronger medical grade versions that aren’t safe and acceptable for at home use. If you have microneedling done at your doctor’s office, expect to get the state-of-the-art new microneedling pens; at home you can only get microneedle rollers. You can amp up your results by adding PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to the treatment for an even greater rejuvenating glow. Check out our BioLift Treatment.
Myth: Microneedling hurts.
Fact: For the most part, microneedling may be uncomfortable but it’s not totally unbearable. Microneedling procedures done in an office setting may be performed with topical anesthesia depending on the depth of the procedure being performed.
Myth: Microneedling leaves holes in the skin.
Fact: While microneedling does create a controlled injury in the skin to incite collagen production and does it by creating microscopic holes, the holes it creates are so tiny that they can’t be seen by the naked eye. You may notice more of a red or pink flush to the skin, which will dissipate soon afterwards, and potentially some bleeding. No need to worry, it’s totally normal. Plus, makeup can easily cover up anything that you don’t want exposed.
Myth: The treatment can’t be done around the eyes or lips.
Fact: Thanks to advancements in both science and skin care, microneedling can safely be done in these areas as long as the right device is used. Microneedling tools, such as DermaPen, which can be adjusted to an appropriate needling depth for different areas, can be used on the upper eyelid, close to the eyelashes of the lower lid, the areas on the side of the nose and the upper lip.
Myth: The only benefit you’ll get from microneedling is an anti-aging one.
Fact: Sure, the treatment works on an anti-aging level to create smoother skin but it has been shown to be effective in correcting acne marks, too. The microneedles stimulate collagen production to help with scarring—when retinoids and other collagen stimulating topicals are applied to the skin after a treatment they are able to penetrate better for more improvement. Applying PRP before microneedling (our BioLift treatment) adds your own growth factors which penetrate the skin giving you an unparalleled rejuvenation.

As early as your mid- to late-20s and into your 30s, you may start to notice the very first signs of aging, which are usually subtle but still bothersome. What was once a smooth complexion may now be home to small sunspots, crow’s-feet, dark under-eye circles and uneven texture. Instead of letting the signs of aging get the best of you, take matters into your own hands and correct the changes that you’re seeing—you may even be able to prevent them from progressing as you get older with the proper plan of attack.
These small fine lines are easy to prevent and even easier to correct. Regular use of a highly moisturizing eye cream helps keep the delicate eye area supple and less prone to lines and wrinkles. To reduce their appearance and prevent new ones from forming, Dr. Tanne can inject the area with Dysport, Botox or Xeomin.
UNDER-EYE BAGS, DARKNESS AND PUFFINESS
With age, the area under the eyes becomes dark and puffy. Makeup can help camouflage bags and circles, but injectables and proper skin care can reverse them. Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane, Restylane Silk and Belotero, can fill in hollows to give the illusion of fewer bags. You’ll also want to use retinol and a product with growth factors to thicken thinning skin around the eyes. Another method of treating dark circles is with conservative use of hydroquinone, which may be irritating to some. Chemical peels, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)/FotoFacial, fractional CO2 lasers and eMatrix Sublative Rejuvantion can also help tighten the under-eye area.
Discolored skin can result from a variety of factors. Protecting your skin from the sun with a mineral based sunscreen is important, but in-office procedures and prescription-strength ingredients can make a difference, too. When treating sun spots, the first line of defense is almost always hydroquinone, which stops the production of pigment in its tracks. If your skin is still discolored, your doctor may choose to use a light laser, like IPL/FotoFacial, or a fractional laser, such as CO2RE fractional CO2, for more severe spots.
If you’re starting to notice lines around your mouth that start at the corner of your nose and extend downwards, those are nasolabial folds, which, if not addressed, may worsen with time. Hylauronic acid fillers like Restylane and Restylane Lyft (previously known as Perlane) are best for filling in these lines, especially among women in their late 20s and early 30s. The next best thing to injectables that doesn’t necessitate the use of a needle are topical products containing hyaluronic acid that temporarily add some volume.
Just because you have lines and wrinkles (and are bothered by them), doesn’t mean you have to live with them. Here are 3 treatments that help reduce their appearance:
The depth and severity of your lines and wrinkles will dictate what type of filler Dr. Tanne will use. When there is a loss of volume from shrinking of the bone or fat pads, the skin loses its scaffolding and signs of aging such as sagging skin and wrinkles are created. By using volumizing fillers, Dr. Tanne can help slow down the aging process and maintain a natural, youthful appearance for you. Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane, Perlane, Restylane Lyft and Belotero stimulate collagen and add volume to plump wrinkles.Collagen stiimulating fillers, such as Radiesse, work on thick folds and wrinkles and stimulate collagen to fill from the inside out. Volumizing fillers are the key ingredient in maintaining a youthful appearance.
Fractional resurfacing lasers, such as our CO2RE fractional CO2 laser, can be used on wrinkled skin that’s the result of sun damage. These lasers work to help lessen the appearance of wrinkles and lines by plumping skin, increasing collagen production and removing the rough, aged outer layer to create a more youthful appearance.
Injectable toxins (also referred to as “neuromodulators”), like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin work to smooth out the skin’s surface by temporarily stopping the contraction of the muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles. Neuromodulators reduce the muscle movement that creates the fold and, over time, often reverse the lines that may already be present in the skin. We recommend Botox or Dysport, Xeomin or Botox when patients start to see a trace of a wrinkle when the face is at rest. This helps prevent etched lines that are more difficult to treat.
In the world of noninvasive fat fighters, there’s always something new on the horizon. One of those, a treatment that does wonders for the body called UltraShape, is a fat melter that targets the abdominal and flank areas to painlessly get rid of fat for good.
GREAT NEWS, we will be offering this procedure SOON!
Instead of using heat or cold, like other fat fighters do, UltraShape makes use of pulsed focused ultrasound energy to target fat without destroying the tissue, nerves, muscles or vascular system. With UltraShape, there is no freeze, no burn and no downtime.
During each 45-minute UltraShape treatment session, done only in a doctor’s office, (on average, three are needed), a handpiece is placed on the body, which is said to feel like the vibration of a cell phone. Totally customizable, UltraShape has made its mark for the mere fact that it works. What sets it apart from other noninvasive fat fighters is that it doesn’t just get rid of fat, but it also sculpts it, too. Some experts say UltraShape may just be the next best thing to liposuction.
One reason why our facial features lose shape and become less defined is because of fat changes. Fat is essential for fullness but over time it starts to descend in some areas and shift position. Adding your fat or synthetic dermal fillers into your face, restoring volume especially to the mid-face, is a big breakthrough in cosmetic medicine.
The “Liquid Facelift” Restores Lost Definition
Surgery is often the go-to for turning back the hands of time, but in the right patient with the right anatomy and realistic expectations, fillers and injectables can work wonders. For those who have lost volume in the face but are not experiencing the looseness that often comes with it, a “Liquid Facelift” may be what you need. Using a variety of fillers and injectables with a mix-and-match approach, Dr. Tanne can re-volumize areas that have become sunken or hollow, namely the temples, cheeks, lips and the jowls. The idea is to restore fullness to the areas that have lost it, not create a tight unnatural look.
Fill Out Thin Lips With Injectables
Aging lips means thinning of the lips, which is a common concern among many women. Lips tend to flatten out, lose their Cupid’s bow and become longer. When using filler in the lips, it’s about restoring a youthful, natural looking shape and, if necessary, adding size. Fillers such as Restylane are the best choice for this. For vertical lines in the upper lip, Belotero and Restylane Silk help plump out those lines without adding volume to the lips. To treat deeper wrinkles around the mouth, Dr. Tanne often recommends fractional resurfacing with either eMatrix Sublative treatments or CO2RE fractional CO2 laser treatment, which can act like an eraser.
Plump Up Saggy Cheeks With Fillers
Sagging cheeks, which is caused by a loss of fat and changes to the underlying bone structure, can lead to deep lines around the mouth. When the cheeks start to fall, so does the rest of the face. Adding volume conservatively to the cheeks can produce a natural appearance to smooth out the area and add lost fullness. If you are trying to achieve a lift in the cheek, Radiesse injected high in the outer cheek often gives excellent results.
Treat Sun Damage with FotoFacial RF
The natural aging process takes its toll on your skin over time. When combined with the effects of hormones, sun exposure and stress, it leaves you looking far from your best. FotoFacial RF safely and comfortably treats age spots (also known as freckles, brown spots or sun spots) Rosacea, spider veins, sun damage, as well as uneven skin tone created by brown and red spots. With its bipolar radiofrequency, FotoFacial RF will simultaneously stimulate collagen production leading to softer wrinkles and tighter pores.
Refresh Your Skin With Fractional Laser Resurfacing
As skin starts to lose its natural healthy glow and the signs of time become more evident, it can cause the face to appear aged and weathered. An effective way to reverse the look of dull, aged skin is with a fractional laser treatment. Whether we use CO2RE fractional CO2 laser (which usually requires only one treatment, but some downtime) or eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation (which has no downtime but requires a series of about 3 treatments) both accomplish controlled fractional resurfacing, forcing the skin to heal and create new, healthy collagen and a smoother, more even surface.
Wouldn’t you love to see radiant skin when you look in the mirror? If so, CO2RE CO2 fractional resurfacing is a procedure that you may want to consider trying. This procedure involves using a state-of-the-art carbon dioxide laser treatment to remove layers of skin in order to reduce the appearance of things like fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, hyperpigmentation and scarring. This laser creates small wounds inside the skin, which helps induce healing. CO2RE CO2 fractional resurfacing only targets specific areas of the skin, and the surrounding skin is not damaged.
At Cosmetic Laser MD in Livingston, NJ, we help restore a more youthful appearance and give you radiant, glowing skin with fractional resurfacing. This non-invasive treatment can help give you back your glow in as little as one treatment. Our medical team, led by Susan Stevens Tanne, MD, can help customize a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs. To schedule your consultation, contact Cosmetic Laser MD today.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
The number of treatments can vary depending on the patient. However, many patients are able to get amazing results with just one treatment. For some patients we recommend follow-up treatments in order to maintain their results. It is important to note that the results of CO2 fractional laser resurfacing are not permanent. Most people will need to get another treatment within a few years.
Is This Procedure Painful?
Most people do not find this procedure to be uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic is applied before this procedure in order to minimize the discomfort. We can work with you to ensure maximum comfort is sustained throughout the procedure.
Is This Treatment Right For Me?
The only way to determine whether CO2 fractional laser resurfacing is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Tanne. The best candidates are people who have realistic expectations and are healthy. However, this treatment is not right for pregnant women. It is also not right if you have a history of cold sores.
Side Effects and Recovery
It takes several days for the skin to heal. For the first 3 – 5 days, you will need to wear an ointment on your skin which we will provide you with. During this time, you may experience some oozing, bleeding, crusting and dryness. Once your skin peels, you no longer need to use the thick ointment, however diligent use of mineral based sunscreen is essential. We recommend sunscreen from ELTA MD. Your skin will still be pink, however you may wear mineral based foundation at this point. We recommend Oxygenetix. Even though the skin will usually heal within two weeks, it is important to note that some redness may persist for two to three months after the procedure. You will notice a significant improvement in your skin after you have healed completely.
To properly recover, it is vital that you to follow all of the instructions recommended by Dr. Tanne. We always recommend that you limit sun exposure in order to help your skin heal faster. You will also need to follow a strict skin care regimen. The net results will be RADIANT SKIN!
We have all seen women with those dreaded “smoker’s lines” around the mouth – those tell-tale signs of aging that are impossible to hide with any type of makeup – THE BARCODE! So what are they, and how can we make them disappear?
Well, smoking and sun damage are the top two reasons for these dreaded lines, but aging causes thinning of the lips in most women, resulting in too much skin above those shrunken lips with no place to go except to causes pleats and folds.
While mineral based sunscreen is the best anti-aging product to prevent damage in the first place, once these lines have etched themselves in, it is time for more aggressive measures.
- CO2RE fractional laser skin resurfacing or a series of eMatrix Sublative resurfacing treatments will turn back the clock and erase the deep and shallow lines.
- For the still present volume loss due to shrinkage of the underlying fat, injectable fillers restore a youthful fullness to this area.
- The third component is to soften the puckering movement that continues to create lines with a small amount of Xeomin or Dysport.
The end result is a smooth, youthful mouth with no sign of that dreaded BARCODE!
